Posted by Phil Andrews A Guelph chef is a key player in the restaurant at the new Trump Hotel property in Toronto.
Posted by Phil Andrews I'm continually amazed at the tendency for Guelph and Wellington County to have a connection to huge stories that unfold in the world. It seems only a matter of time before we're chasing a local connection to some incredible seemingly distant news story such as the explosion that killed tourists at a resort in Mexico or the mysterious crash of the Air France jet off the coast of Brazil. We're now exploring the story of the Mount Forest resident Cynthia Vanier. We've had a reporter in Mount Forest and we'll soon be filing a report from our digging in the community.

Some people don’t have homes. Some people’s home are not safe. Many are fortunate to have homes that are their personal sanctuary – a place to restore balance in a fast-paced world and to raise families. So when the sanctity of your home is destroyed by the actions of someone else, you feel threatened, violated and angry. This is the experience of some residents in our community, a consequence of the behaviour exhibited by some of the people who live in shared rental housing in their neighbourhood. This is not a new experience but it has been growing in recent years with increasing demand for shared rental housing in our community and a decline in respect shown by some members of our community for the impact of their behaviour on others. Shared rental housing, which includes...

How many times have you just sat down for dinner and the phone rings? You jump up to answer only to find it’s one of those annoying sales calls – how do they get your number anyway? I was speaking with Meg Penstone, FCSS Manager of Credit and Debt Counselling the other day and she asked me if any of our clients had mentioned receiving cold calls from these so called Debt Counselling companies that we have been hearing on the radio lately. Funny thing is ,we have begun to hear people talking about it. Meg prepared an article about his topic for the Guelph Mercury in December and I asked her if I could share it here with you. So, with Meg’s permission here it is. Meg Penstone, FCSS Manager of Credit & Debt Counselling’s latest column in the Guelph Mercury htt...
This is how much of a sugar addict I am. I drove an hour on a dark, cold, rainy January night just so I could sample smoked sugar. What’s smoked sugar you ask? It’s sugar. That’s been smoked* As eager as I am to try new sweets, I am equally entrenched in my culinary dislikes. Without hesitating, I will tell you I don’t like custard, I don’t like caviar and I don’t like chives. And it’s not just things that start with the letter c, either. Foie gras, beets, parsnips, liver, and truffles (the fungus, not the chocolate) don’t make it into my kitchen. But I was so eag...
Re the proposed development at 180 Gordon Street, the development proposal serves two useful purposes – it makes use of a vacant lot in a highly visible location, and it helps to increase density in an area near the downtown. However, the … Continue reading →

I'm going to step back in time with today's photo selection - and pay tribute to the Guelphites that helped create this fine city that we call home.
It's easy to forget about the folks that came before us - the pioneering types that set about building Guelph from a vision and little more. Sure, we have a few historic plaques sprinkled about the city and an annual John Galt Day to honour our ancestors. But on a daily basis, does anyone appreciate the sweat it took to ge...

I am just back from Brothers' weekend - an Estill brother tradition for 20 plus years. It was a great weekend (although we still miss my brother Mark ).

Looking for candidate names and voting recommendations for the 2012 PCPO Convention in Niagara Falls? Look no further, I got ya covered right here!
It's been a while since I spent any time blogging, and this week I was semi-publicly repremanded by a prominent Canadian for taking a hiatus. (you know who you are, Sir... thanks for the kick in the pants!) So I thought with the Bi-Annual PCPO Convention coming up next weekend in Niagara Falls, maybe it was time to put fingers to keyboard. (as opposed to pen to paper... this is the 21st Century after all!)
I've been spending some time thinking about who to support and why, so I decided to check online for more info about some of the candidates. So I punched in some search terms into good old Google,...

Awful first period by everyone, including the usually-reliable Garret Sparks, who let in three softies. Saginaw didn't dominate this game but Guelph just couldn't get it going offensively, including missing a penalty shot (Tanner Richard) and not scoring during a full two-minute five-on-three in the third period. Very soft game by most of the forwards. No hitting. No cycling. No sacrifice. ...
Spinning did not originally appeal to me but where knitting could not inspire, weaving did. The loom asks me to feed it something original. Today was my first time: on Danny's lovely Lendrum spinning wheel with a passionate teacher at hand. From some indifferent Briggs and Little pencil roving came this bulky, cushy, two-ply yarn I actually like.
Danny tends to make fine yarn but I like funky. Spinners tell me it's hard to relear...

Today would have been my Dad's 60th birthday. We had been planning to hold a huge celebration, because making it to sixty years old was going to be a really big deal. His father (Ron), my Grandpa, had died at age 54, and his younger brother, my Uncle Wayne, had also passed away quite young, at 51. Dad used to joke that with every day he lived, he was setting records as the longest-lived...
Lately I have been using a slightly different time management technique which I call the "See Do" method. As the word implies, I see it and I do it.
This method works great for keeping things clean and tidy. See a spot, wipe it. See something out of place, put it away.
In email. I get an email and deal with it. Previously I had often used a 2 minute rule. If I could deal with it in less than 2 minutes I would but leave the longer ones. And during busy times, I would reduce that to a minute or less.
The see do method helps reduce stress and that nagging feeling there is something still ahead to do. Essentially, all tasks are fully completed.
Where the system has flaws and things required to make it effective:
1 - All other time manageme...

We still don’t really understand Muslims very well. Nor do we seem to understand domestic violence. Both have been around long enough, so we should have gotten to know them by now. Last Sunday’s verdict in a Kingston murder trial focused on the religion of the accused. It sparked a lot of talking head television commentary. A lot of it wondered if the murders were a normal part of Muslim culture. It was domestic violence, no different from the brand practised by Catholics, Presbyterians, Sikhs, Hindi and every other sect of the God-fearing population. Atheists as well. When a Catholic man murders his wife and children, the news channels don’t rush out to interview priests and bishops to see if there is a connection between the papacy and the crime. When Edward Dakin burned his former...
Posted by Phil Andrews I noted with some appreciation the sign posted for weeks outside the Gordon Street McDonald's restaurant site that stated it would be serving customers in another six weeks. The signage was brilliant because it never was fixed to a start date and six weeks was a nice time range to roll out there for the reno project to end. Six weeks just sounded both not-today and also not-so-far-off. Well, the six weeks sign that amused me is down. Another is up calling for applicants to work at the new extremely madeover eatery. I wonder which restaurants benefitted during the down time at that McDonalds.

With the year end fundraising figures out for all the parties, encouraging signs for the Liberal Party in particular. The Conservatives still FAR outpace everyone, but the gap is narrowing and the Liberals are showing peculiar resilience, given recent electoral manifestations. As an aside, those scoffing at any fundraising "uptick" would be the same people jumping all over any "setback" as evidence of looming death, a revealing reality. There is something to be said for a third party easily besting the Official Opposition, as well as increasing donors, given perceptions.
It wasn't that long ago that the Conservatives regularly had 4X the fundraising of the Liberals, ditto for the amount of donors. This latest quarter shows the closest comparison to date, Liberals actually raised...
